Sophia visited the doctor for the first time today. Her appointment was at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Calk. Nonnie watched Annabelle so we could at least keep the oldest child free of germs. We arrived at 1:47 p.m. to be exact, and as we exited the 4 Runner, I realized that I had left her hospital discharge paperwork at home. I took Sophia inside and started completing the paperwork while hubby ran home to get it. He arrived back promptly at 2:00 p.m.
Sophia decided to wake up shortly after I had arrived and while I was still completing the paperwork. She blessed me with a dirty diaper that leaked onto the only outfit I thought to bring. Naturally! And, she decided it was time to nurse. I nursed her in the newborn waiting room. I guess that is just one difference between a first and second child. I was not shy about nursing her then and there with strangers in the room!
Sophia's Stats at 5 days:
8 lbs, 2.5 oz (almost up to birth weight)
21" length
14" head circumference
Sophia's discharge weight taken Sunday morning (April 18th) around 1:30 a.m. was 7 lbs, 14.5 oz.

Dr. Calk commented that I had probably noticed my milk coming in a lot sooner this time. I told him that I actually couldn't really tell. It hasn't come in full force with leakage and the need for breast pads as it did with Annabelle. However, I think the nursing bra I wore with Annabelle and purchased before we were discharged from the hospital is a little small. He said I'll probably notice over the next month. I did mention to him that Sophia typically only nurses on one side for each nursing. He said that is probably because she's getting all she needs from one because I am producing so much more milk than with Annabelle. Dude, I didn't think I could produce any more milk. I was crazy engorged with Annabelle, and I am actually comfortable, so far, with Sophia.
Dr. Calk also asked, "Isn't this so much easier the second time around?" Yes, it most definitely is so far! And, right now, I am wondering why everyone scares you off from having a second child by all of their comments. I did have a select few tell me that they've found it actually easier with two children.
Dr. Calk told us that the two reasons that parents of a second child needlessly see him are because their child is sleeping too much or their child is spitting up too much. He said they typically spit up more because the mother is producing more milk.
Sophia also had her first shot (outside of the hospital). She received her first Hepatitis B shot. We opted not to give it to her in the hospital because they had such a hard time finding out if she ever received it. It took a minute for her to realize she had been hit with something that hurt, but she got over it very quickly too. She was fine as soon as I picked her up and held her.
